We would like a translation of the Hebrew to confirm patriarchal lineage. The stone is located in the Ushpol Hebrew Cemetery in NE Lithuania.

This stone is a bit of a challenge; do you have any other images?

This is what I can make out:

A monument

of a simple and honest man, our teacher, the rabbi,

S_____ BEN-TZIYON son of Reb Menachem

He passed away on the 24th day of the month

of Sivan of the year 5640/5680

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

The deceased is described with the adjective 'tam'; this word has several translations. I prefer 'simple', which is not a negative term, but just means that he was a 'regular person'. Another definition is 'perfect'.

His name is preceded by an abbreviation that translates to "our teacher, the rabbi". This indicates that he had rabbinical ordination; he was not necessarily the rabbi of a community or synagogue.

His name poses a challenge. It could be a double name, the second part of which is Ben-Tziyon. However, the first letter of what would be the first part of his name is a Samech, and I cannot think of any man's name that begins with this letter (the rest of the letters are a bit ambiguous). On the other hand, rather than being part of his name, it might be his profession, "Sofer", a scribe. It is not common to include the deceased's profession on his tombstone and on the rare occasions that I have seen this, it has followed the name, not preceded it. If, however, this is his profession, then the reading would be, "Here lies ... our teacher, the rabbi, a scribe, Ben-Tziyon, son of Menachem ...". Do you have any additional information about him?

The year of death is also not perfectly clear. It might be 5640, and it might be 5680.

If it is 5640: The 24th of Sivan of the year 5640 began at sunset on June 2nd, 1880, and ended at sunset on the 3rd.

If it is 5680: The 24th of Sivan of the year 5680 began at sunset on June 9th, 1920, and ended at sunset on the 10th.
