For Max Sprincen, whose family is outlined in yellow in this 1900 US Census, what did the census taker write under "occupation?" The 1905 Census lists him as a shoemaker. Max was actually a rabbi, a teacher and a scribe, noted in his death record and on his gravestone.

I would also like to know what the numbers above his occupation say/mean.

It looks to me like he is listed as a "Talmad" maker (talmud?) which would seem to make sense if he was actually a Rabbi. Perhaps whoever answered the enumerator's questions had replied, with an accent, "He makes the Talmud." Just speculating... Also, I believe the numbers might just be some sort of markings used by the enumerator. If the numbers were on the actual manifest, they would be related to application for naturalization, Declaration of Intention, etc. but I think some of the markings on these census forms were for "internal use only" by the Census department, and do not necessarily tell us more about our relatives.

Hello Karen,

My thoughts on Talmud Maker would be that he was a scribe who wrote the letters on the parchment of the Torah. That seems to fall in line with your mentioning that he was a scribe.
