Here lies a woman, CHANNAH, wife of

the honored Favish Crown

She passed away on Shemini Atzeret

and was buried on the 24th day of Tishri

(There are a few grammatical errors on this stone; for example, it actually says "he passed away" and "he was buried").

Channah died on the holiday of Shemini Atzeret, which is a festival that closes out the holiday of Sukkot. The Hebrew date is the 22nd of Tishri. The following day is Simchat Torah. Funerals do not take place on either of these days, which is why she was buried on the 24th.

Hello Noel,

This tombstone is quite historic, as it is located in Marysville, California, and was part of the Gold Rush in the 1850s. More importantly, this woman and her family were more than likely actively involved in that very important time of history. I don't imagine there were many Jews in Marysville at the time...although there were just a few brave and adventuresome Jewish pioneers in California and what is now Arizona and New Mexico.

I was curious, so I googled "Jews in Marysville, CA in the 1850s" and found some additional information. It seems that the cemetery has been reclaimed by the Jewish community. You might want to check it out further.....Jo
