Here lies

ELCHANAN son of Reb Yaakov the Levite

Passed away 2 Cheshvan 5698

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

The deceased and his father were Levites, members of the tribe that traces back, son to father, to Levi, one of the twelves sons of Jacob. Levites served special functions in the Temples of old, and still receive recognition in the synagogue today.
