I would like a translation of the Hebrew words on top two lines of the headstone. Thank you, Rachel

Hello Rachel,

The translation of the tombstone is as follows:

"Here lies Ischchar Behr, Ben/(son of) Reb Efraim, HaLevi. He died on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Elul (followed by the Hebrew year). May his soul be bound up in the eternal bonds of life."

Ben = son of

Reb = an honorific title, used as a sign of respect preceding the given name of a Jewish male. It does NOT imply rabbi.

HaLevi = (The Levite) indicates that he is a Levite, a connection dating back to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. It is a designation passed forward from father to son since that time period (dependent upon the child being born of a Jewish mother). The Levites were the assistants to the Kohanim in the ancient Temple.

The first part of his Hebrew name is difficult to read if one is not familiar with it. In addition to being written without vowels, this particular name has a silent letter in the middle.

His name is YISSACHAR BER.

Sorry for my typing error. I meant to spell the name as Ischachar/Yischachar which is really the same sound and name with different spelling as corrected by the astute responder....Jo
