Rachel,

The Hebrew names on the tombstone are as follows:

"Shraga Feivel, Ben/(son of) Reb Akiva"

The word "Reb" is used as a title of respect when using the given name of the Jewish male, however, it does NOT imply rabbi. It is interesting that it was used for the name of the father, but it was not used preceding the name of the son. Perhaps (and I'm just thinking out loud) modernity and being in the US may have changed the custom that the son and family were now using....more informal and less traditional.

He passed away the 2nd day of Passover of the year 5704.

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

The second day of Passover falls on the 16th day of the month of Nisan.

In the year 5704, this day began at sunset on April 8th, 1944, and ended at sunset on the 9th. As the secular date on the stone is the 8th, this means that he passed away between sunset and midnight of that day. If he was an observant Jew, his death might have occurred while he was attending the second Seder meal.
