'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

'Rosh Chodesh' is the beginning of new month on the Jewish calendar. This can be a 1-day or a 2-day event. If the month just ending has 29 days, there is a one-day Rosh Chodesh, which is the first day of the new month. If the month just ending has 30 days, it's 30th day is called the "first day of Rosh Chodesh", and the 1st day of the new month is the "second day of Rosh Chodesh".
In this case, there was a 2-day Rosh Chodesh, meaning that the "first day of Rosh Chodesh of the month of Kislev was actually the 30th day of Cheshvan, the month that was ending. This day began at sunset on November 27th, 1989, and ended at sunset on the 28th.

His father's name was Tzvi; this is Hebrew for deer. Men with this Hebrew name often -- but certainly not always -- have a secular name similar to 'Hersh', which is Yiddish for deer, such as Harry.
