This is the tombstone of Lazar Braun, who lived in Szeged.

Can someone please translate the Hebrew?

I'd really be interested in any biographical information on birth town, profession, father's name, other relatives, or really anything else. The Hungarian is clear, but seems really limited. He is really a brick wall.

Most of the Hebrew text here consists of flowery words of praise, which I will translate if you'd like.

There is, unfortunately, extremely little biographical information here, not even the father's name, which is rare; most tombstones include the name of the father, although usually not the other details that you have requested.

Here is what is given:

His name was ELIEZER BRAUN ("Broin" in the literal Hebrew).

He died on the Sabbath, the 3rd of Shvat, 5646, which began at sunset on January 8th, 1886, and ended at sunset on January 9th.

His name is preceded by abbreviations that indicate he may have been a highly respected rabbinical scholar. You can the wavy line above the abbreviations.

The first is כשת = כבוד שם תורתו (or possibly כבוד שם תפארתו) -- I've rarely seen that on a tombstone. The other abbreviation is more common.

People often added praise on tombstones - so I would not treat this as proof of his status - but given the fact it's not often used at all - it's a hint worth pursuing.

I have been asked to provide the full translation, which is as follows:

Here lies

A man, precious in spirit and soul [or: honest, and precious of soul], pure of hands [=incorruptible] and pure in heart,

A crown of Torah, the honored, ELIEZER BRAUN, may he rest in peace,

He passed away on the holy Sabbath day, the 3rd of Shvat, 5646 [it actually reads 646, followed by an abbreviation, lamed-fay-kuf, that represents the words “according to the small count”, which means that the leading 5 is understood]

[In the next two lines – which rhyme -- his name, Eliezer Braun, appears in enlarged letters, but also forms part of the text]

Eliezer, the Holy Place [synagogue or place of learning] was your resting place while you were still alive,

As He gathers your spirit and your soul, may He delight you doubly.

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.
