my dear husband, our teacher, the Rabbi

CHAYIM HERSH son of Yaakov

He passed away 7 Marcheshvan 5678. May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

The deceased has an abbreviation in front of his name that translates to "our teacher, the Rabbi". This indicates that he had rabbinical ordination; he was not necessarily the rabbi of a congregation.

The date of death is a bit hard to make out. Assuming that I have read it correctly: the 7th day of the month of Marcheshvan [this month also has the shorter name: Cheshvan] of the year 5678 began at sunset on October 22nd, 1917, and ended at sunset on the 23rd.

The year might be 5675, rather than 5678. In that case: the 7th of Marcheshvan, 5675, began at sunset on October 26th, 1914, and ended at sunset on the 27th.
