Here lies

DAVID son of Reb Gershon the Levite

Passed away 27 Cheshvan 5744

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

[at the bottom]: Please have mercy.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

David and his father were Levites, members of the special group of men who descended from Levi, one of the sons of Jacob. This is a designation passed from father to son. Levites had special functions in the Temples, and still receive recognition today.

The phrase at the bottom, "Please have mercy", is one that I have not encountered on a tombstone before.

Hello Ruth,

A translation of this tombstone for David Kuperstoch:

"Here lies David, Ben/(son of) Gershon, HaLevi. He died on the 27th day of the Hebrew month of Cheshvan (followed by the Hebrew year). May his soul be bound up in bonds of life."

**The word "Reb" is used as a title of respect preceding a Jewish male's given name, however it does NOT imply rabbi. In this case it is a single name.

The name of his father bears the designation of Levite, one that is carried forward from father to son since the olden times of the Temple in Jerusalem.

In a box at the very bottom of the stone is a Hebrew phrase "Rachem Na". Its translation is "mercy please".
