Please could some kind person translate this marriage document. I am hoping that the document gives the date & place of birth of the bride.

This document is a bit hard to decipher, but I will do my best (the Registrar was obviously not hired for his good penmanship).

First of all, I am not at all sure that this is a marriage document, as it appears different -- and has slightly different introductory wording -- than the other marriage documents that I have seen. It might, rather, be an engagement document. Marriage documents usually start with a version of the following: "Today there appeared before me, for the purpose of marriage ...". This document begins, "Today there appeared before me as engaged ...".

There is obviously a second page to this document. Do you have it? If yes, then the signatures would probably make it clear if this is an engagement or a marriage certificate.

The document is dated in Berlin on December 22nd, 1874.

1. The man was the merchant Mendel (Emanuel) Herrmann, Jewish, 29 years old, born in Greifenberg, residing in Berlin, son of the merchant Levin Herrmann and his wife Dina nee Saalfeld.

2. The woman was Regina Levy, Jewish, twenty and a half years old, born in Landsberg an der Warthe, residing in Berlin, daughter of the deceased merchant Abraham Fischel Lewy and his deceased wife Johanna nee Markuse.

Next come the witnesses:

3. The merchant Robert Flatow, 30 years old, residing in Berlin

There are no birth dates gives here, another reason why I feel that this is not the actual marriage document.

The exact addresses are a bit hard to make out. If they would be helpful to you, let me know and I'll read them as best I can.

It would be very useful to have page 2 of this document, which would give the rest of the details about the second witness, and would show everyone's signature. If it is an engagement document, then Regina's signature would be her maiden name; if it is the marriage document, then she would have signed with her married name, followed by her maiden name.

By the way: I was not familiar with the family Markuse, so I did some quick googling for the name "Johanna Markuse" and found her here: https://www.geni.com/people/Johanna-Lewy/6000000079464862191.
Her married name is spelled Lewy, rather than Levy, but it is obviously the same person. I looked hard at this document, but believe that here it is spelled Levy (v and w look very similar in the German script, but I'm almost positive that here it was spelled with a v).

Thank you so much for your detailed reply & you are quite correct, there is a back page which I have just uploaded it to View Mate.

It does not look like there are any birth dates etc. however, I do know that Mendel Emanuel Herrmann was born on 26th October 1845.

I have his discharge certificate from the army that notes he was on 5 July 1867, certified to have body weakness & inflamed eyes & put in reservists of the 11th Infantry Brigade.

This discharge certificate was with several family documents relating to my Schottlander & Schon family from Alt Schottland / Brody & Lemberg respectively. However, I am trying to find out how Mendel fits into the family.

Mendel Herrmann is 29yo, residing in Berlin on Koenigstrasse 47;
his parents seem to be alive in Maerkisch Friedland, Deutsch Crone county (or this is Dina Saalfeld's birth place);

Regina Levy is 20 and a half years old, residing on Schmidtstrasse 44 in Berlin (same address as witness #1)

(except Berlin, all those locations are in Poland today, with Polish names)
