Hello Bruce,

"Here lies Chaim, Ben/(son of) Reb Yehudah Leyb, who died on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shvat (followed by the Hebrew year).

The word Reb preceding the name of his father is used as a title of respect and does NOT imply rabbi.....Jo

I want to apologize for writing 'so' instead of 'son', and also for neglecting to add: 'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

I see that the second helper has the date of death as the 15th of Shvat. It is actually the 25th.

I also want to respond to your post 94544 here, because I cannot make out everything. If I respond there, other helpers might see a 'response' and not bother to take a look.

This is what I can make out:
Here lies my dear husband and our dear father [there is another word or abbreviation at the end of the line that I cannot read. It MIGHT be the abbreviation for "our teacher, the rabbi", which usually indicates that the person had rabbinic ordination; sometimes this abbreviation is used in error]

The next line has his name, which is also very faded. It appears that the first word is not an actual name, but "haLevi", meaning "the Levite [member of the tribe that originated with Jacob's son Levi]. The designation haLevi usually does not precede the name of the deceased, but follows his name or, more commonly, the name of his father. Unfortunately, I cannot decipher his name (I tried to look at his English name to see if it might be a clue, but cannot read that, either). His father's name was Yosef (Joseph).

The date of death was the 20th of Tevet, 5629.

The last line is the abbreviation for, "May his soul be bound up in the bond of life".

Sorry for the typo. Indeed, the date of his passing was on the 25th of Shvat (not the 15th). Thanks to another person's response for catching this.....Jo
