Her Hebrew name is preceded by an abbreviation that translates simply to 'the'. It could theoretically represent 'the' [anything], such as 'the woman', or 'the modest', and or 'the important'. I have chosen to use the word "honored".

When encountering the title 'Reb' in front of a man's name on a tombstone, I normally explain that 'Reb' is an honorific and does not mean rabbi.
In this case, it is not so clear. I see that this stone is in Great Britain. Here, in the U.S., men often have the title of Reverend if they have special status in the Jewish community, such as being the local Shochet. Not knowing more about Rev. Caplan, I am not sure whether my reading of the letter 'Resh' as 'Reb' is correct, or whether it might actually stand for Rav, Rabbi, in this case. (Normally, a rabbi would be indicated as such in a different manner).

The 1st of Adar of the year 5737 began at sunset on February 18th, 1977, and ended at sunset on the 19th. The stone has the secular date of the 18th, which means that she passed away between sunset and midnight of that day.

The first response is quite accurate and very thoughtfully expressed.

I'd like to add an educated opinion here for you to evaluate. Regarding the title "Reb" following her father's name....It is usually a title of respect, and actually it is probably best translated as "reverend". Generally it does NOT imply rabbi.

When reading the English portion of the tombstone, his name is noted as the late REV. Jacob Caplan. I would think that if he was an ordained rabbi, that title would have been included in his name, and it might have been written as RABBI Jacob Caplan rather than REV.

Please keep in mind that this is merely an opinion. So, until you find proof otherwise, keep both possibilities in mind when doing your future research.
