Would appreciate a complete translation of the inscription on the tombstone of Pesha Rivka, daughter of Yakov. It was sent from the Mount of Olives cemetery in Jerusalem. I do know (1) her father Yakov is described as שו"ב abbreviation for shocket and bodek (2) the following word with the question mark is the town she was from, it's a corrupted form of Vonsosh/Wasosz in Poland. Thanks for any help with the rest. She was a young woman at the time of her death. --Ed

Here lies the modest woman, proper in spirit, with a pure soul, the crowning glory of her husband, her deeds will be praised at the gates.

She will be blessed above all the women of the tent.

PESHA RIVKAH daughter of Reb Yaakov, ritual slaughterer and inspector from Viansam.

She passed away in the best days of her youth, 18 Sivan 5675. May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

Many of the terms of praise are biblical in origin, as is the phrase "She will be blessed above all of the women of the tent", which comes from the Song of Devorah the prophetess, praising the actions of a woman who, through her deeds, turned the tide of a battle (from the Book of Judges, 5:24).

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

She died on the 18th day of the month. Normally, the number 18 is represented by the letter Yud (10) followed by the letter Chet (8). In this case, the letters are reversed, and spell the word "Chai", life.

The 18th of Sivan of the year 5675 began at sunset on May 30th, 1915, and ended at sunset on the 31st.

Transposing the letters of 18 to make the word life is not uncommon.
I don't remember seeing it on gravestones (could be just my memory), but I suddenly wondered whether it was done in response to her young age... a conscious or unconscious "she should have been alive".
