our dear mother

Mrs. ESTHER

daughter of Reb Yitzchak the Levite

[she passed away] the 2nd day of Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5685

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

As always: 'Reb' is an honorary title; it does not mean rabbi.

The "2nd day of Rosh Chodesh -- the 'head of the month' -- of Iyar" was actually the first day of that month. When "Rosh Chodesh" is a two-day event, the first day is the last day of the month that is ending, and the second day is the first day of the month that is beginning.
