Category: Translation - Tombstone Approval Date: 9/15/2021 11:41 AM Family Surname: Brick Country: USA Town: Memphis, tn	Click the picture to enlarge	This is my great grandfathers tombstone. I want to know his Yiddish name and surname. He immigrated from Hamburg, Germany in 1906 to New York.

9/16/2021 7:01 PM	Here lies Reb AVRAHAM YITZCHAK son of Reb Meir He passed away 26 Sivan 5708 May his soul be bound up in the bond of life. ====================================== 'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi. Avraham, Yitzchak, and Meir [pronounced MAY-eer] are all Hebrew names. While many Jews do have names that are Yiddish rather than Hebrew, the majority of names are Hebrew. Most Jewish tombstones do not show the surnames in the Hebrew, and there is none here.
9/21/2021 2:46 PM	It seems his Hebrew name was Abraham Itzhak , son of Meyer Naftar (not sure how that name would be pronounced or identified).
9/21/2021 2:50 PM	Correction to my earlier response: Naftar isn't a name, it is the word "deceased" and what follows is the Hebrew date of death. Apologies.
