On  Response
10/11/2026 3:35 PM The names and dates are:

Yisroel Meyer son of Yitzchak Mordechai
died 15 Cheshvan 5673 (Oct 26, 1912)
10/11/2026 5:49 PM Here lies

[next are four line of praise; let me know if you'd like them translated]

This is followed by

Our teacher, the Rabbi, YISRAEL MEIR son of Reb Yitzchak Mordechai

He passed away 15 Cheshvan 5673

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.
========================================
Yisrael [yis-RAH-ayl] is Hebrew for Israel. Meir [MAY-ear] is a Hebrew name that means "one who brings light". Yisrael Meir is a common "double name".

Yitzchak [YITS-chahk] is Hebrew for Isaac. Mordechai [MORE-deh-chigh] is a Biblical name from the Book of Esther. In both of these names, the 'ch' is pronounced as in Chanukah or Bach.

'Reb' is an honorific; the father of the deceased was not a rabbi. His own name, however, is preceded by an abbreviation that represents the words “our teacher, the rabbi”. This normally indicates that the person had rabbinical ordination, not necessarily that he was the rabbi of a synagogue or community. I need to point out that this abbreviation occasionally appears in error (or, sometimes, simply as words of praise to indicate that the person was scholarly), so I would suggest trying to get confirmation of his rabbinical status – if any – from a second source.

The 15th of Cheshvan, 5673, corresponds to October 25th/26th, 1912.

By the way: if the deceased is someone important to you, and you would want to observe the Yahrzeit (anniversary of the date of death), for example by lighting a memorial candle or giving charity in their memory, this date is approaching soon. The 15th day of the month of Cheshvan is in about two weeks, and will begin [coincidentally] at sunset on Sunday the 25th and ending at sunset on Monday the 26th. (Actually, it is not so coincidental, as every 19 years the same secular and religious days fall within a day of each other. 1912 was 114 years ago, which is a multiple of 19.)
