This note is at the bottom of a 1946 letter written in Polish by a woman named Bela. I don't know if the note was written by the letter's author (seems unlikely) or added by a family member later. I also don't know if it's Hebrew or Yiddish. If anyone is able to tell me what it says I'd be extremely grateful.

8/2/2026 10:18 PM This not is in Hebrew, and must have been added later; it gives additional details about Bela.

Here is the translation:

The Holy person [also used for a martyr]

BAYLA TZUSE daughter of Reb Zishe Yehonoson

may G-d avenge her blood.

The Yahrzeit is the 29th of Sivan 570_

------------------------------------------------

She had a double name; both parts are Yiddish names.

Her father also had a double name; the first part is Yiddish; the second part is Hebrew for Jonathan.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

The word "Yahrzeit" refers to the anniversary of the date of her death. The bottom of the last line of text is cut off. If you can send me the complete bottom of the image, I would probably be able to make out the year.

Do you know the exact date of the letter? If she wrote it in 1946, this means that she was alive after the war had ended. Jews who returned "home" after the war were not necessarily safe, as Poles killed many of them. Perhaps she was among this group?

If she was killed on the 29th of Sivan, 5706: this date corresponds to June 27th/28th, 1946.
