I would be grateful for help with one word.

This is a Jewish birth register from Przemyslany, Galicia, 1908. The entry follows the register's usual formula: the mother's name, then "rit. an" and her partner's name, then a word or two, then "Tochter des" and her own parents.

My question is the word boxed in red. It seems to begin "Leinwand". Is it the surname Leinwand, or the start of a trade, such as Leinwandhaendler or Leinwandfabrikant?

I should say that the image is poor - the leaf is torn, the contrast is low, and the page is slightly tilted. I have put a clear "Leinwand" from elsewhere in the same register beside it for comparison.

Any reading, even a partial or uncertain one, would help. Thank you.

8/2/2026 5:21 PM Hello,
To me, it looks like "Leinwand," but the word has been clearly crossed out as an error. My suspicion is that it was meant to refer to Abraham, whose name begins in the line above. His real surname, however, must have been "Mandel," which was squeezed into the adjacent column as a correction.

The letters following "Leinwand" look to me like "verh.," as in the other image you posted.
8/2/2026 6:21 PM Thank you — this answers a question that had been open in my file for some time, and I had been unable to resolve it locally at any magnification.

Your reading settles that it is the surname Leinwand and not the beginning of a trade compound. That matters more than it might appear: it means a group of Leinwand households in the same register, which I had been setting aside as unrelated, may well be the same family recorded under its other surname.

I am grateful you were willing to read a poor image and say plainly what you saw.

Adam Mandel
