We have some relatives that were buried at Mt Carmel Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. My grandparents and great grandparents along with some aunts and uncles.

This image I discovered the other day and need help with the translation with the letters on the headstone. We thought our great grandfather George was the first decedent in the United states from Russia. Now we don't know.

Hello Patrick,

Here are some bits and pieces of information regarding this tombstone.....

"Here lies the woman Mrs. Hxxxx Pesha, daughter of Avrohom the Kohane, who died on the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar (followed by the Hebrew year.) May her soul be bound up in the bonds of life."

*While I could not decipher the first part of the woman's double given name which starts with an "H" or "CH" sound, some guesses might be Chaya/Haya, Chana/Hanna, or Chava/Hava.

Kohane is a priestly designation passed down from father to son since the times of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem, provided that the male child is born of Jewish mother.

Just some additions to the response of the previous helper.

I do not read the second part of her name as Peshe. The first vowel has an ah sound. I feel that it was most likely Bashe [BAH-sheh].

The date of death was the 19th of Iyar, 5665 or 5668.

If the year was 5665: the 19th of Iyar corresponded to May 23rd/24th, 1905.

If the year was 5668: the 19th of Iyar corresponded to May 19th/20th, 1908.
