I have made my guess that this reads:

חיי שרה בת יוסף-פייערל

(In addition to the date- 2nd of November 1904)

But I am not certain. Can anyone confirm?

Hello Zachary,

My educated guess here too, but I'd like to suggest "Chaya Sora, Bat/(daughter of) Yosef Feivel". This is based on the possibility of the spelling showing Feivel, which is a more common Yiddish name.

I agree that the first part of her name is CHAYA. Because the last two letters in Chaya spell one of the versions of G-d's name, some people have a custom to omit the last letter and replace it with an apostrophe, as can be seen here.

As to the second part of her father's name: At first glance, I would expect it to be Feivel. However, the next-to-last letter is not a B/V. In the word 'bat', daughter of, you can see how the person wrote that letter Bet/Vet. The next-to-last letter in the father's name has an R sound; it is the letter Resh, and matches the Resh in the name Sarah and in the year (the second character). Thus, either the name was meant to be Feivel, and the scribe made an error, or it is a highly unusual name, FEIEREL.

I have no experience with Hungarian birth registers.

Birth registers I've seen from Russia, from Galicia, from Vienna always have the mother's name at the very least. A father's name might be missing. But the mother's name??? In Jewish tradition, when praying for the health of a person, they are identified by their mother's name. Ditto when a Rabbinical court has to decide whether a person is Jewish - it's determined by the mother.

Therefore, my hypothesis: they were adding mothers' names after the dash.

To test it, I would look at the full page of this register to see how other parents' name are written.

If I'm right, Chaya Sara was the daughter of Yosef and Pa-yerl
