The question is in the last paragraph.

Six people wrote this postcard to my mother on her last evening in Aschaffenburg, Germany, 20 April 1939, addressed to her at the home of a half-uncle of my grandmother in Darlington, England. It was also Hitler’s 50th birthday.

The five people on the right were my grandmother, a good friend of my mother in both Germany and the US, my grandfather, my aunt, and a brother of my grandmother. All of these people did leave Germany later, although the friend, Helga Löwenthal (later Greenbaum), lost her parents. I am able to read this.

On the left is a note from Hermann Weinheim who left Germany on the same day as my mother but is otherwise not connected to me. I could not read all of what he wrote. I think that it reads “Nach hoffentlich Va?a??o-freier Fahrt gut angekommen zu sein wünscht Dir.” Can anyone figure out the third word and anything I may have misread? I translate it as “Wishing you a safe arrival after a hopefully Va?a?o-free journey.”

Apart from the mystery word you've read and interpreted Hermann's inscription correctly. That strange word certainly doesn't look German. "Vasano" is Greek for torment or affliction. If Lore and Hermann were both Hellenophiles this might have been a little shared joke.

Thanks for the reply. I am sure that you are correct. It had not crossed my mind that it may not have been a German word. I add that my mother had taken five years of Greek in school along with eight years of Latin. I also add that his name was Weinheimer, not Weinheim.
