I have a photograph of two women taken in Vienna. I am trying to understand which generation of ancestors they are. I'm hoping their clothes could provide a general date and thus the general ages of the two, and thus confirm who the likely women are.

The woman on the left could be Josepha Haslinger (born 1867) or her niece Pauline Anhaltzer (born 1888). The woman on the right could be Emma Haslinger (born 1865), sister of Josepha, or her niece Martha Anhaltzer (born 1887). (Martha is the sister of Pauline Anhaltzer).

The picture was taken in Vienna, where the Aunts lived and the nieces were born. The photo studio listed on the back says:
A·M·SCHEIN
WIEN, IX.
NUSSDORFERSTRASSE 10·12
Telefon: 5034...(can't read the rest)

The two nieces immigrated to the US in 1893. Pauline or Martha could have visited Vienna as adults. Emma Haslinger immigrated to the US in 1893 but made many trips back to Vienna between then and 1936. Josepha left Vienna in 1939.

The photographer had a studio at that address from 1907 to 1938, so it is definitely 20th century.
From City directories you may be able to figure out when he got a telephone to further narrow it down.
7/9/2026 2:29 PM the quality of the image, and particularly the faces, looks later than earlier. it looks a lot more like b&ws from 1960 and onwards, rather than early 20th century. if the photographer went out of business in 1938, i would guess this was his later work.
