My great grandfather died in 1908 and I believe was born in 1847 ?? when I was searching for his birth record I found this death record?? and I suspect that my great grandfather was in fact named after his brother who died the year before he was born ??

I would be very grateful if someone could check and translate this image and either confirm or correct my understanding ??

Image is hard to read, but it seems you are correct. The death of Herszek KARPENKOPF was reported on 17 April 1846 by his father, Cała KARPENKOPF. He was the son of Cała and Blima Szymonów and he died on 16 April 1846.

298. It took place on the seventeenth day of April in the year of eighteen forty-six, at the hour of five before evening, in Warsaw. Appeared personally the Jews Cale Karpenkopf, a grain merchant, sixty-six years of age, residing at number 2185, and Joel Mehlsak, a shammes, fifty-two years of age, residing at number 1840, and stated before us that Herszek Karpenkopf, earning a living with his parents, native of Warsaw, the son of the first appearer and Blima the daughter of Szymon, a married couple, had deceased the day before, at the hour of nine in the evening, in the apartment of his parents, leaving behind him his parents. I signed this act after reading it, whereas the appearers could not write.
