=====================================================

Here lies

a man, honest and respected, precious in spirit

and pure of heart

Our teacher, the rabbi, TZVI HIRSH son of Reb Betzalel

Karpenkopf

He passed away on the 21st day of Marcheshvan

of the year 5669

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.
-----------------------------------------------
The name of the deceased is preceded by an abbreviation that represents the words “our teacher, the rabbi”. This normally indicates that the person had rabbinical ordination, not necessarily that he was the rabbi of a synagogue or community. I need to point out that this abbreviation occasionally appears in error (or, sometimes, simply as words of praise to indicate that the person was scholarly), so I would suggest trying to get confirmation of his rabbinical status – if any – from a second source.

He had a ‘double’ Hebrew name: Tzvi (which is Hebrew) and Hirsh (which is Yiddish); both words mean deer.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Betzalel is a Biblical name.

The month Marcheshvan is also known by the shorter name Cheshvan.

The 21st of this month in the year 5669 corresponds to November 14th/15th, 1908.
