We always understood that our great-grandfather's Hebrew name was Moshe Yehudah. That's what our grandfather told us, and how our grandfather was identified (ben Moshe Yehudah). We just noticed that the grave of our great-grandfather seems to say "Moshe Yudah" -- no Hebrew letter hay. Is this likely an error? Is there another explanation?

The traditional biblical spelling is with the Hay. When a human being -- and likely a non-Jew -- is copying from handwritten text, they are often errors.

Of course, whoever wrote the text might have made the error.

"Juda" also seems to be a secular Hungarian name, and it may be that this is what he was usually called. In addition, the 'h' sound is often swallowed.

Having translated many gravestones, I've seen more name variations than I could have imagined when I first began. Without a Hebrew document, the book into which the local Mohel recorded his 'clients', the local Jewish communities birth register, which would likely have had the Hungarian and Hebrew versions of the names involved, or a marriage Ketuba, there is really no way to be absolutely certain. If he was a member of a synagogue in the States, they might also have a record of his Hebrew name (for purposes of calling him up to the Torah reading, for example).
