Hello,

I seek two transcriptions and a translation of the 4-line Hebrew inscription on my great-grandmother's potion of a double headstone in the Mt. Judah Cemetery. She immigrated from the Bialystok area around 1891 and died in New York City in 1922.

The image is cropped to the Hebrew inscription. Both Hebrew and English portions appear in the photo of the double headstone.

For my genealogy records and continuing research, I request:
1. A transcription of the original Hebrew inscription as it appears on the stone
2. The expanded (full) Hebrew text, if any abbreviations are present, and
3. An English translation of the Hebrew.

The abbreviation פ"נ represents the words פה נקברה

The abbreviation 'ר represents the word ‘Reb’. (I have never seen this spelled out, as – since there are no vowels – it would look like ‘Rav’, meaning rabbi, and might cause confusion.)

The abbreviation י"ט, which is a date, would also not be spelled out, as its purpose is to represent a number, with the י (yud) having the value of 10 and the ט (tet) having a value of 9, giving the total of 19.

Likewise, the year is a numerical representation and would not be spelled out. The first letter, ת , tav, represents 400. The second letter, ר, resh, represents 200. The third letter, pay, פ, represents 80, and the last letter, ב, bet, represents 2, giving a total of 682. The first number in the date, representing the thousands, is not shown, but is understood to be a five, making the Hebrew year 5682.

The five letters at the bottom represent the phrase
תהי נשמתה צרורה בצרור החיים

I am returning with a slight correction/clarification.

The two letters that normally appear as an abbreviation at the top of a tombstone, פ"נ , can actually represent slightly different words. Po Nikbera פה נקברה means "SHE is buried here"; Po Nikbar פה נקבר means "HE is buried here"; and Po Nikbarim פה נקברים means THEY are buried here.

In this case, as the abbreviation is centered between two tombstones and is meant for both, the spelled out transcription would be פה נקברים
