I believe that this is the first time that I have seen a stone that combines text for both parents, rather than splitting the text between the two halves of the stone.

It is a beautiful and tragic stone.

Here lies our father, the holy

YEHOSHUA son of Reb Shmaryahu the Levite

He was killed on Monday, the 21st of Tamuz, 5641.

And to your right, here will rest our mother

TZIPPA daughter of Meir.

She passed away on the first of Rosh Chodesh Tevet 5672

May their souls be bound up in the bond of life.

Yehoshua is Hebrew for Joshua. Shmaryahu means "G-d watches over him".

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

He was a Levite, thus descended from the biblical tribe of Levi; this tribe had special significance and religious duties. "The Levite" is a designation passed from father to son.

The 21st of Tamuz, 5641, corresponds to July 17th/18th, 1881.

Tzippa is a Yiddish name derived from the Hebrew Tziporah, which means bird.

Meir [may-ear] means "one who brings light".

Tzippa passed away on the "first [day] of Rosh Chodesh. “Rosh Chodesh”, literally the head of the month, also known as the New Moon, indicates the start of a new month. It can be a one-day or a two-day event. In this case, it was two days, and the first day of Rosh Chodesh of the month of Tevet was actually the last day of the previous month, Kislev. The actual date was the 30th of Kislev. In the year 5672, this date began at sunset on December 20th, 1911 and ended at sunset on the 21st. (Coincidentally, this was the 6th day of Chanukah.
