Three Jewish Commuties in Medieval Spain:

Authored by two Spanish scholars, the book describes the history of three neighboring communities in the medieval kingdom of Valencia on the basis of uncovered archival material in local archives.

Many aspects of the Jewish life of the period including the political and legal status of the communities, their organization and economy are examined for each of the three neighboring Jewish communities – Burriana, Castellón de la Plana and Villareal. The documentation is presented in the original language - Catalan or Latin - along with an English résumé.

The present index includes 136 surnames found in the studied documents. The covered period is mainly the 15th century although some names are from the 14th century.

For each surname, one will find the related given name, the place and year where and when it was found. For some of the names a note has been added.

Acknowledgements

We acknowledge the tremendous contributions and lifelong dedication of Mathilde Tagger, z"l who made this index available. For many years, and right until her untimely death, Mathilde Tagger was a very close friend and collaborator with Jeff Malka. Together they worked to promote Sephardic genealogy research and educate the public about its enormous potential.

In addition, we express our grateful appreciation to Dr. Jeff Malka for his monumental ongoing effort to collect and make accessible Sephardic genealogical information, and for his generosity in contributing his extraordinarily valuable collection to JewishGen.
