This database includes 1,675 records of members of the Jewish community of Mannheim as of June 1, 1940.

Mannheim had one of the larger Jewish communities prior to Hitler, with over 5,000 members in the 1920s.  By the 1930s the community had shrunk considerably due to emigration, the first wave of deportations in 1938 and then the major deportation June 1, 1940.  This collection was obtained by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) from the Jewish community in Mannheim.

It lists confirmed members but excludes young children, as of June 1, 1940.  The information consists of names, street addresses, and, sometimes, date and place of birth, "titles" (Mr., Mrs. Widow, Dr.) and often comments such as emigrated, deported, etc.  Much of the information is handwritten and difficult to read and researchers may wish to refer back to the original material or other sources such as the 1939 census and the German Government's Gedenkbuch when the information they find is incomplete or confusing.

This database includes 1,675 records of those in Mannheim on June 1, 1940.  The fields for this database are as follows:

  • Name (Surname + Given name)
  • Maiden name
  • Date of Birth
  • Place of Birth
  • Residence — Original typewritten
  • Residence — Revised handwritten
  • Deportation date
  • Other information and comments

The information contained in this database was indexed from the files of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), RG 14.056M.  The original source material is from the Jewish Community in Mannheim, Germany.  Harriet Mayer, a USHMM volunteer, transcribed the list for JewishGen.
