Background

This database includes information on 922 Jews deported from Italy in 1943 and 1944.

Liliana Picciotto in her book Il Libro della Memoria, lists Jews deported from Italy, mostly to Auschwitz, in 1943 and 1944.  The material includes dates and places of birth, spouse's and parents' names, dates and places where arrested, dates of deportation, and, in a few cases, that they survived.  In 1943 most Jews were deported from Italy via France and their names, accordingly, are included in existing databases including the International Tracing Service (ITS) at Bad Arolsen, Germany.  Names from the majority of 1944 deportations, do not appear in ITS material or printed sources.  Most are listed as "assumed dead / no date".  In a few cases, particularly where a person was sent on from Auschwitz or survived, further information is available in other sources and these should always be checked.

This database includes the names, dates and places of birth (not nationalities) of 922 deportees born outside of Italy, including in Hungary, France, Palestine, Belgium, Poland, Czechoslovakia, the former Soviet Union, Rumania, Bulgaria and a few from the United States, England and Switzerland.  Jews born in Germany are not included in this list, but are part of a separate database previously created and are already part of JewishGen's Holocaust Database.  Jews born in Austria are not listed, since these names appear in the DÖW (Dokumentationsarchiv des österreichischen Widerstandes - Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance) database.  This listing also excludes Jews born in Yugoslavia and Greece.  Researchers interested in Jews born in Italy are recommended to utilize the book itself.

If a name is of interest, the book itself should be consulted since it contains additional information on family members, date of deportation and what occurred to them in Italy prior to deportation.  (Please use the contact email in the Acknowledgments section below.)  The book was developed from Italian records, and therefore identified names and locations in Italian.  To make the information more useful, the names of the towns and individuals have been translated from Italian to their more common names; Leopoli becomes Lvov and Parigi becomes Paris, and personal names such as Giuseppi becomes Josef.
