Aveyron DeportationsIntroduction by Matt Stein
BackgroundThis collection contains records of 391 Jews residing in the department of Aveyron, situated in south-central France, who were deported during the period 1940-1944. This data was collected by Simon Massbaum during several years of visits to departmental archives in France and Belgium and presented in his 2022 tome Aveyron-Drancy-Auschwitz: Parcours Individuels Par Communes des 391 Juif Déportés Ayant Vécu en Aveyron. Mr. Massbaum divides the 391 deportees into two groups: 1) 277 who were living and arrested in Aveyron and deported, and 2) 114 who officially resided in Aveyron but were arrested elsewhere in France and deported. In addition to the searchable data presented here, Mr. Massbaum's book contains a 1 to 2-page summary of each individual/family based on the documents he was able to collect from various sources. Three of the 391 deportees were my family: my mother's aunt Klara Berg (Isakower), her husband Moses, and their teenage daughter Mia - who had been living in Aveyron for two years after fleeing Vienna and Antwerp - were arrested in the village of Canet d'Olt by French gendarmes on 26 August 1942. This effort is dedicated to their memory, with thanks to the BOULOC family for taking them in during their time as refugees in France.
