Southeast France Name Declaration - 1808

The Jewish community of Fes was founded in the 8th century (CE). For centuries Fes was a Torah as well as a study center of the holy language. Donash Ben Labrat, Rabbi Yitshak Alfassi - the Riif, Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon - the Rambam, and other important rabbis lived in that community. Several rabbinical dynasties grew and developed in Fes.

With the creation of the State of Israel and the disintegration of the community of Fes like tens of other Moroccan Jewish centers, Rabbi David Ovadia compiled his two volume book in order to preserve the Fes Jewish heritage.

Because of copyright laws, the present index only includes the names of the 660 Rabbis.

This information comes from: Fas vehakhameiha [Fes and Her Rabbis] by Rabbi David Ovadia (Jerusalem, 1979. 2v. Hebrew).
