Cemetery Description: Donated by David John Butler in conjunction with the website http://www.britishcemeterymadrid.com/. The British Cemetery was founded in 1854. Until then there had been huge problems for all except Roman Catholics everywhere in Spain, not only in Madrid, to obtain burial places. From then on not only British Anglicans and other Nonconformist denominations, were buried in the cemetery but also Russian and Greek Orthodox and Jewish as well. There are approximately 1000 people buried in the cemetery in total.
