The bulk of this collection consists of correspondence, much sent by Joseph Bendix while he was stationed in German Southwest Africa before his death in 1904 during the Herero Revolt. There are also a number of condolence letters and related materials, including obituaries and a photograph of Bendix's grave site, sent by military personnel to Bendix's family in Germany. Other materials include a passenger list and articles mentioning Bendix and other soldiers who fell during the Herero revolt.
