List of Jews Made Denizens, 1661-1687

Introduction By Eric Feinstein

BACKGROUND

A denizen is a foreigner allowed certain rights in the adopted country. This is a database that is the work of the genealogist Samuel Oppenheim. It was published in an article he wrote, A List of Jews Made Denizens in the Reign of Charles II and James II, 1661-1687, Publications of the American Jewish Historical Society 1911, No.20 (1911) pp.109-113. There were two different lists contained in the article. The first was a list in a rare volume in the British Museum written by P. Carteret Webb who advocated for the cause of the Jews. The second list was published by the Camden Society in 1862 of foreign Protestants and alien residents in England which included some of the names on the Webb list, but other names of Jews that were not, were listed by Samuel Oppenheim.
