Census of the Jews of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) in 1815Introduction By Eric FeinsteinBACKGROUNDThis is a census of the Jews of Ragusa. The Republic of Ragusa was an independent entity on the Adriatic that existed between the Venetians on one hand and the Ottomans on the other from the Middle Ages until the conquest by the French under Napoleon in 1806. It was a major maritime hub with a fleet of ships engaged in sea trading and commerce. Portuguese Jews arrived at least as early as 1544 and the Jewish quarter or Ghetto and presence lasted until the Second World War. Zdravko Sundrica (1915-1995), was an archivist at the State Archives of Dubrovnik, a historian, and a theologian. He wrote an article Dubrovacki Jevreji i njihova emancipacija (1808-1815) / The Jews of Dubrovnik and their emancipation (1808-1815) which was published in Beograd in 1971 by the Savez jevrejskih opština Jugoslavije [Federation of Jewish Communitues in Jugoslavia]. As part of this article Sundrica reproduced the Italian language census of the Jewish population from 1815. DATABASEThis database includes 205 Jews (men and women) that lived in Ragusa. It includes people from Ancona, Carus, Fiorenza, Lugo, Ragusa, Spalato, Trieste, Tunesi, and Zante. The language of the database is Italian. The fields in the database are:
