10/4/2026 11:46 PM Here lies

Reb TZVI CHAIM son of Reb Yitzchak

He was born on Rosh Chodesh Nisan

of the year 620 in the sixth millenium

from the Creation of the World

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.
==================================================
'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

The first part of his double name, Tzvi [tsvee] is Hebrew for deer. The Yiddish word for deer is Hirsh/Hersh, and he might have been called by that nickname. It is probably why the secular name of Henry was chosen, as an approximate "match" to Hersh. The second part of his name, Chaim [CHAH-yim, with the ch as in Chanukah or Bach] means life.

Yitzchak [YITS-chahk, same 'ch' as above] is Hebrew for Isaac.

This stone has some unusual features. For one thing, it has the date of BIRTH in the Hebrew (date of birth is rarely included) and no Hebrew date of death at all (date of death appears on the majority of tombstones). In addition, while the year is normally given without the 'thousands' digit, as is the case here, it is 'understood' that the missing digit is a 5. Here, the phrase "in the sixth millenium from the Creation of the World" has been added.

"Rosh Chodesh" is the term used to indicate the start of a new Hebrew month. While it is sometimes a two-day event, in this case it was one day, and thus corresponds to the first day of the month of Nisan. In the Hebrew year of 5620, this date began at sunset on March 23rd and ended at sunset on March 24th, 1860.

He died on July 30th, 1955. The corresponding Hebrew date was the 11th of Av if he died before sunset, and the 12th of Av if he died after sunset. The Hebrew year was 5715.
