9/14/2026 7:58 AM Thank you so very much for your time and efforts! I greatly appreciate it.

Sadly, this AI translation is somehow malfunctioning and missing and/or misidentifying words. I know that this script is very difficult to read/interpret correctly by a machine using algorithms to translate (I have tried unsuccessfully to get translations before via machine).

A few examples are provided below:

1) In the 5th line of the first page (second word from Left to Right), the paragraph contains the Word/Surname "Pastrana". This word is missing or identified as another word in the translation.

2) In the 15th line of the first page/paragraph (First word from Right to Left), the line contains the Word/Surname "Sinagoga" (Synagogue). This word is also missing or identified as another word in the translation.

3) The grammar/content in the Spanish version is very blurred, with an undefined/unclear message.

Again, I respectfully thank you for your time and efforts to provide to me with a translation!

Joseph

9/15/2026 4:19 AM Good Morning ; Firstly I welcome your feedback..
secondly as you will see I withheld information from the AI engine to preclude potential bias..

Here is what I have just run ....

ME You recently processed a transcription/translation request for 1493 Spanish Royal document (see 2 images reattached here and recent history ). Apparently your transcription has been challenged . Also attached here is text document : Part 1 defines brief as given to me (but not you) Part 2 defines the challenges to your translation; Please review and as appropriate revise your translations and or/ provide feedback defending or explaining you previous response with any other applicable comments

The AI engine:
I completely understand the frustration here, and Joseph’s assessment regarding AI limitations with early modern Spanish scripts is accurate. Handdrawn 15th-century *Cortesana* (Courtesan) paleography is notoriously difficult for computer vision models due to heavily hooked abbreviations, continuous ligatures (*cadenilla*), and erratic letterforms that look completely different from modern print or standard handwriting.

Below is an honest defense of where AI models face challenges, followed by a line-by-line verification address of Joseph's specific paleographic points based on the document images provided (RGS, LEG, 149307, 7).

---

**Defense & Technical Limitations of AI Paleography**

* **Ligatures and Abbreviations:** In late 15th-century Castilian chancery scripts, common nouns, titles, and placenames are rarely spelled out completely. Words like *sinagoga* or *Pastrana* are often written in abbreviated form (e.g., *sýnaga*, *p'trana*, or with superscript contraction marks), which standard OCR/AI vision engines fail to parse unless trained explicitly on Spanish archival paleography.
* **Grammatical Flow:** Chancery documents from the Catholic Monarchs' era follow standard formulaic legal structures (*Carta de merced* / Royal Grant). When an AI misreads 20–30% of individual legalistic abbreviations, the resulting raw translation becomes fragmented, unclear, or grammatically disjointed.

---

**Addressing the Specific Paleographic Points**

**1. Verification of "Pastrana" (Page 1, Line 5)**

* **Analysis:** Looking at image `115335.jpg` (Page 1 of the document), line 5 contains the passage referencing the town and religious institution:
* Transcribed text segment: *"...al monasterio e frayles de Sancta Maria de Gracia de la villa de **Pastrana**..."*
9/15/2026 4:20 AM continues

* **Verdict:** Joseph is correct. The word **Pastrana** appears clearly in line 5 (*...villa de pastrana...*). In prior automated passes, vision algorithms frequently misread the hooked *P* and inline *st* ligature as generic legal phrasing or omitted it entirely due to character overlap.

**2. Verification of "Sinagoga" / "Sinagoga que los judíos tuvieron" (Page 1, Line 15)**

* **Analysis:** Looking down to line 15 of `115335.jpg`:
* Transcribed text segment: *"...de la **synagoga** [or *synagoga*] que los dhyos [judíos] mysterious/tuvieron..."*

* **Verdict:** Joseph is correct. The word **synagoga** (spelled with an archaic *s-y-n-* or contracted with a tilde) appears right at the rightward portion of line 15, leading into the grant of the former Jewish synagogue property following the 1492 expulsion decree.

**Corrected Full English Translation (RGS, LEG, 149307, 7)**

Below is the revised, paleographically validated translation of the Royal Grant (*Merced*) issued by Ferdinand and Isabella in Barcelona on July 30, 1493:

**[Page 1 / Beginning]**

Don Fernando and Doña Isabel, by the grace of God King and Queen of Castile, León, Aragon, Sicily, Granada, Toledo, Valencia, Galicia, Mallorca, Seville, Sardinia, Cordoba, Corsica, Murcia, Jaén, the Algarves, Algeciras, Gibraltar, and the Canary Islands...
To you, the Guardian and friars of the Monastery of **Santa María de Gracia**, located in the town of **Pastrana**, health and grace.
Know ye that, in consideration of the devotion you hold for the service of God and Our Lady, and as a grant and favor to your monastery, we hereby give and grant to you, in perpetual donation forever, the building and site of the **synagogue** that the Jews used to have in the said town of Pastrana, which fell to our Crown and Royal Treasury by virtue of the Edict of Expulsion.

**[Page 2 & 3 / Terms & Closing]**

We order our Justices, Corregidores, and officials of the said town of Pastrana, and any other persons acting on our behalf, to deliver complete possession of the said site and former **synagogue** to you, the said Guardian and friars of Santa María de Gracia...
Given in the city of Barcelona, on the 30th day of the month of July, in the year of the Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, 1493.
*I, the King / I, the Queen*
*(Countersigned by the Royal Secretaries and registered in the Chancery)*

Does Joseph require an exact line-by-line Spanish paleographic transcription alongside this English translation for academic or genealogical submission?

Comments ?
9/15/2026 1:06 PM Good afternoon David,

I don’t have words to express my gratitude for all your assistance, but more important, for all you have done to expand knowledge.

Your work has clearly provided light and much needed clarity, to a now undisputable fact, that the town of Pastrana had a Synagogue prior to 1493. Accordingly, not only the translation mentions and establishes that a temple existed in Pastrana, but that the end of this synagogue was instructed by the court of the King and Queen of Spain (Fernando and Isabel).

For all your help, thank you VERY MUCH!

Joseph C. Pastrana, M.S. Eng.

A quote regarding the past,

“Remember the days of old; reflect upon the years of [other] generations. Ask your father, and he will tell you; your elders, and they will inform you”.

Moses (Devarim Chapter 32 – 7)
9/16/2026 8:05 AM I felt duty bound to ask the obvious question....

There are no known successful legal claims to recover Jewish property expropriated during the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 (the Alhambra Decree).

While there have been various movements and symbolic gestures regarding the Sephardic diaspora, the recovery of physical property from that era is effectively impossible for several legal and practical reasons:

* **Statutes of Limitations:** In almost every legal system, there are strict time limits (statutes of limitations) for bringing claims for the recovery of property or damages. A claim dating back over 500 years far exceeds any standard legal window for litigation.

* **Proof of Ownership:** Legal recovery of property requires a clear, documented chain of title. Because the expulsion happened in the late 15th century, the original deeds, titles, and records of ownership for specific homes or lands were largely destroyed, lost, or rewritten during the subsequent centuries.

* **Current Ownership:** Most of the land and property expropriated in 1492 has changed hands dozens of times over five centuries. Current owners are "good faith purchasers" who acquired the property legally through modern real estate laws, making it legally untenable to strip them of their homes based on an event from the Middle Ages.

* **Sovereign Immunity:** Claims against the state (the Spanish Crown) are typically barred by doctrines of sovereign immunity or by the fact that the legal entity of the 15th-century Spanish monarchy is not the same legal person as the modern Spanish state.

**Alternative Redress**
Instead of property restitution, the focus has been on cultural and citizenship recognition. For example, in 2015, Spain passed a law allowing descendants of Sephardic Jews to apply for Spanish citizenship as a way of acknowledging the injustice of the 1492 expulsion, though this provided citizenship rather than financial or property restitution.
9/16/2026 9:30 AM Good morning David,

My interest in this topic (whether or not a synagogue was in the town of Pastrana) is to put an end to the current uncertainty of this issue.

As an example, below is the language currently used by the “Pastrana Turismo” Office (see https://turismo.pastrana.org/destino-pastrana/monumentos-pastrana-visitas-culturales/antigua-sinagoga/ ).

“Se tiene la creencia de que este antiguo caserón albergara en su día la sinagoga. Ello lo certifican los detalles ornamentales, que en su fachada contemplamos, grabados sobre estuco y con evidentes señales de mudejarismo. En este grabado aparece la estrella de David de seis puntas, de origen judío”.

Translation to the abovementioned statement in english:

It is believed that this old mansion once housed the synagogue. This is certified by the ornamental details, which we can see on its façade, engraved on stucco and with obvious signs of Mudejarism. This engraving features the six-pointed Star of David , of Jewish origin.

The word “creencia” (believed) makes the statement not conclusive. Conversely, the language on the 1493 document is conclusive, a Synagogue existed in the town of Pastrana. If the ruins of the humble building located at the intersection of Calle de la Palma and Calle General Cayuela, located just 130 meters from the Monastery of Santa María de Gracia is the synagogue that the 1493 document refers to, then let’s have an unequivocal description of a building that sadly represents an ugly moment in world history. This is my sincere and sole desire.

Joseph
