Reb CHANOCH HENOCH son of Reb

David, an educated man

and honored in the eyes of man

He did good deeds

and who could count his righteous acts?

He occupied himself with the needs of the community

faithfully, and he passed away

4 [or: 5] days into the month of Shvat

of the year 5665

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

‘Reb’ is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Chanoch [CHAH-NOCH (the second syllable sounds like “no” followed by ch; both occurrences of ch are pronounced as in Chanukah or Bach)] is a Biblical name. I believe that it has been rendered as Enoch in English.

The secular date of death is a bit faded; it looks like January 1st. However, based upon the Hebrew date, I believe that it may have been the 11th. (And I see now that you did indicate the 11th in your notes.)
