Here lies

the modest woman

ESTHER daughter of Reb Shalom

Aharon. She passed away 2 [or: 20] Tamuz

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

Esther is a major Biblical character, having an entire book of the Bible named after her.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Her father had a double name. Shalom is the Hebrew word for peace. Aharon is Aaron, also a Biblical name.

The Hebrew year is not given. Assuming that the secular date of death is correct, the corresponding Hebrew year (at that time of year) would have been 5676.

However, there is a discrepancy between the secular and religious dates of death. August 3rd, 1916, corresponds to the 4th or 5th of the month of Av. And if the religious date of the 2nd of Tamuz, 5676, is correct, then the secular date would be July 3rd, 1916, not August 3rd. (The 20th of Tamuz would match July 21st) I have tried playing with the secular and Jewish dates and years, even changing the Hebrew month, and I cannot force the dates to match. Do you have another source for her date of death?
