Hebrew ownership inscription on the flyleaf of a printed book in Arabic that has come down in my family. On the same page, above this line, there is a second line in Arabic script. I would be grateful for a transcription of the Hebrew, letter by letter where the letters allow it, and for your view on two questions. Is this an ownership inscription, or something else? And does the hand read as the owner writing in his own book, or as a later note written by someone else about a previous owner? That distinction matters a great deal to me. I would rather not say what I think the name is, because I want a reading that is independent of my expectation. Please transcribe what you actually see, and mark any letter you are unsure of. The family lived in Safed and Tiberias and later in Egypt, and read and wrote Arabic. The likely period is roughly 1870 to 1920. The hand is Sephardic cursive.

I'm not sure about the first letter, but if my reading is correct it might stand for עבד השם. It certainly seems like an ownership inscription, but who wrote it depends on how you read the first word.
