  • (xxiii) During the period covering the congregation's early years, the distinction between a minister and a reader was somewhat blurred. A reader might be fulfilling many of the duties usually ascribed to a minister, in particular in congregations where no minister had been formally appointed, and might frequently be referred to as a minister. Accordingly, until 1917, when the post of reader or chazan of this congregation appears to have become clearly delineated, we have placed ministers and early readers in the same list.

  • (lxxiv) Where a person is first listed in a year book as holding a particular office, it has been assumed that his term of office commenced in the year of publication of the relevant year book and that he continued in office until the commencement of office of his successor, unless the office was vacant. Initially year books corresponded to the Hebrew year, and thus ran roughly from autumn of one year - the year of publication - until autumn of the next year. From 1909, year books were published according to the Gregorian year, being published generally towards the end of the year prior to the year appearing in the title of the year book. (e.g. if he is listed in Jewish Year Books 1935 through 1938, it is assumed that he commenced office in 1934 and continued in office until 1938). However, it should be noted that this is only an assumption and accordingly his actual years of office may differ slightly from those shown here. Jewish Year Books were not published during WWII subsequent to 1940. There were no Jewish Year Book listings of officers (other than secretary) subsequent to 1956.

  • (lxxv) The same methodology applies as regards the names listed here as to lay officers, except that, where indicated, where the office of secretary was also held by the minister or reader of the congregation, more precise data may have been extracted from the sources used for the preparation of his profile. To view a short profile of a secretary whose name appears in blue - hold the cursor over his name.

Price's start date as January 1891 and as he was listed in Jewish Year Books as also serving as secretary from the first edition (1896/7) through 1922 and again from 1928 through 1933, it is presumed that he also served as secretary from 1891 until he was listed in the first Jewish Year Book.

  • (lxxxii) As Rev. Swift was listed as secretary in Jewish Year Books both prior (from 1935) and subsequent to (in 1945/6) the cessation of publication during World WarII, it is presumed that he also held the office of secretary during the war years..
