Notes & Sources ( returns to text above)

  • (i) In the first listing of the congregation, in the Jewish Year Book 1951, the name appears as "Enfield & Winchmore Hill District Synagogue". However, in the subsequent edition (1952), it appears as  "Enfield and District Hebrew Congregation". From the 1953 edition, the name "Enfield and Winchmore Hill District Hebrew Congregation" is shown, which remained the name until about 1963 (presumably when the Congregation became affiliated to the United Synagogue).

  • (ii) Welcome to our shul! – Enfield and Winchmore Hill Synagogue, Jewish News Online, 23 April 2015 (accessed 14 February 2018).

  • (iii) 1949 is the year given by the congregation itself (The United Synagogue website, the Jewish News profile (above), etc.). However, all editions of the Jewish Year Book refer to the congregation as having been established in 1950.

  • (iv) The United Synagogue 1870-1970 by A. Newman (1977), p.222. The affiliated status is shown in Jewish Year Books until 2012, and the constituent status from 2013.

  • (v) Reserved.

  • (vi) Based upon Rev. Lewin's listing in Jewish Year Books from 1951 through 1961, and confirmed by the Jewish News profile, above. With effect from the Jewish Year Book 1954, he is referred to "Hon. Minister". There were no ministers listed for the congregation in the editions 1962 through 1967.

  • (vii) Rev. Golomb's "Who's Who" entry in Jewish Year Books (latest 1999) and his listing as minister of the congregation in the editions from 1968 through 1992. There was no minister listed for the congregation in the 1993 edition.

  • (viii) Based upon Rev. Silverman's listing in Jewish Year Books from 1994 through 1999. However, in the 1994 edition his initial (presumably incorrectly) is given as "E". He is first given the title "Rabbi" in the 1996 edition.

  • (ix) Based upon Rabbi Taubman's listing solely in the Jewish Year Book 2000.

  • (x) Based upon the listings of Rev. Levy (formerly Rabbi Fleishman) in the Jewish Year Books 2000 and 2001. There was no minister listed for the congregation in the 2002 edition.

  • (xi) Based upon Rabbi Brackman listing in Jewish Year Books from 2003 through 2006. He later served as Chabad emissary until he resigned from Chabad in 2010.

  • (xii) Based upon Jewish Chronicle press report Enfield hires Sufrin, 15 August 2008. Rabbi Sufrin was still in office per United Synagogue website, last accessed 7 May 2021.

  • (xiii) Data based upon listing in Jewish Year Books Where a person is first listed in a year book as holding a particular office, it has been assumed that his term of office commenced in the year of publication of the relevent year book and that he continued in office until the commencement of office of his successor, unless the office was vacant. (Year books were published towards the end of the year prior to year appearing the the title of the year book. For example, if an officer is listed in Jewish Year Books 1951 through 1954, it is assumed that he commenced office in 1950 and continued in office until 1954). However, it should be noted that this is only an assumption and, accordingly, his actual years of office may differ slightly from those shown here. There were no Jewish Year Book listings of officers (other than secretary) subsequent to 1956..

  • (xiv) The United Synagogue 1870-1970 by A. Newman (1977), p.220.

  • (xv) Reports on synagogue membership in the United Kingdom, published by or on behalf of the Board of Deputies of British Jews and which can be viewed on the website of the Institute of Jewish Policy Research. Click HERE for links to the various reports.

  • (xvi) Open Corporates website, Charities Commissioners' website (during beta test stage) and Open Charities website, all accessed 27 March 2018.

  • (xvii) The London Borough of Enfield, an Outer London Borough within the Greater London administrative area, was created on 1 April 1965 upon the merger of the Municipal Boroughs of Enfield, Edmonton and Southgate. All three municipal boroughs had been within the former County of Middlesex.

  • (xviii) The former Registration District was Edmonton, from formation of the congregation until 1 April 1965. All registers would now be held by current register office.
