Translator's Note:

  1. This table apparently contains several typographical errors in the original, which have been silently corrected in the present edition. I have also standardized certain names, including Bervikunkin, Kobryniets, Kiselyev, Kupershmid, and Khludnyevitsh, which appear in different spellings throughout the book.
In some cases, variant spellings merely reflect different orthographic conventions. One common feature is the insertion of an additional yud (rendered here as “y”) before a vowel, following a Russian-influenced spelling practice. This additional yud serves primarily as a marker of palatalization for the following vowel rather than representing a separate sound, which may result in variant forms of the same name (e.g., Kobryn-y-ets).
The surname Valkaviski is written in the original without vowel markers. Because it appears to derive from the town of Volkovisk (Belarusian: Vawkavysk), the alternate transliteration Volkoviski is also possible. Return
