Translation of
Gedenbukh Galitzie
(Memorial book of Galicia (Poland & Ukraine))
Project Synopsis
Complete the translation of the articles in Yiddish that have not yet been translated into English, and post with images (photos, maps, etc.) as permissions allow. This material will be available to all visitors to the JewishGen website. Once completely translated, the book will also be made available in a print on demand edition from JewishGen. This was originally published in Yiddish in 1964 in Buenos Aires by N. Zucker, Editor. (335 pages, Yiddish). The book is a collection of material from a variety of authors, many giving first-person accounts of their lives before, during, and after the Holocaust. It includes poems, stories, and biographies of esteemed residents, rabbis and writers. There is a section specific to Skole (Ukraine) as well as articles on the dispersion of residents of Galicia to Mexico, Buenos Aires and elsewhere, including prior to the Holocaust.
Key Audiences
The many descendants of those who lived in Skole (Ukraine) and nearby areas of southeastern Poland and Ukraine, constitute the primary audience for this book. However, those interested in original source material on the history of Jewish people in this region would find many compelling stories, poetry and literature. Additionally, historians and authors who utilize first-person accounts in their writing would benefit from this material. Due to the range of literary genres employed in this collected work, including personal narrative, history, poetry, etc., this book would benefit a wide array of audiences.
Project Importance
This book is a collection of many voices in an area that bridges Poland and present-day Ukraine, but changed nationality throughout its history. Jews crossed these borders prior to and during the Holocaust for safety and contact with family. The translations may shed information about culture, commerce and faith in this fluid region.
