Introduction

In 1934, Hugo Gold edited “Die Juden und Judengemeinde Bohmens in Vergangenheit un Gegenwart.” Few works on the thousand year history of Jews in Bohemia had been written and much of the material on the towns had to be researched. Individual towns sections were written by town leaders or archivists. For genealogists, the material on individual towns varies from just photographs to detailed lists of occupants, in a few cases going back hundreds of years. This index was assembled to assist genealogists in determining the material that may be available on towns where their ancestors lived and in what language, German or Czech, the material is presented. An attempt was made to indicate the number of pages of text, so that a genealogist wanting a translation of a town's essay, can estimate the cost of such an endeavor. An estimate of whether names were included in the text and the type of illustrations are also presented. The illustrations are usually those of current leaders of the Jewish community and perhaps views of the synagogue. A few pieces on individual towns have been translated and made available through the Austria-Czech SIG web page. The Austria-Czech SIG decided in August 2006 that they would not sponsor the translation of this work in view of the new Czech language electronic “Encyclopaedia of Jewish Communities” available through the web site for the Jewish Museum in Prague, (www.jewishmuseum.cz). Many thanks to Celia Male and Ruth Corman for their help in determining what information to include and for starting the project.
