Nachshon, Rachel (Ruchele)

An Elegy for Ruchele Nachshon

by Sara and Pesach Berman

Tender in years you were
And your future who could imagine?

Your image was like a beautiful flower in the eyes of everyone who saw you
And your mannerisms, like a hind in the field, a charming mountain goat.
To your parents, you were like a joyous, pleasant wing.
Your face – the face of an angel, and the goodness of your heart
Knew no bounds.

Your faithfulness to your family –
Who can estimate?

To your brother – you were a tender mother,
Protecting him from all dangers,
Lest, Heaven forbid, something bad happen to him.

To your parents, a source of pride
And of sublimity of soul,
With their mouths they gave thanks to the good, benevolent, G-d,
Day by day, and hour by hour,
That he bestowed you upon them.
Fortunate is the ear that heard the words of your mouth.

And to your grandparents –
Who can count the hours
Blessed ones, in your company,
And the reparations that the Creator of Humanity bestowed upon them,
For their suffering during the war of annihilation.

We have all been bereaved, our souls mourn.
Even if we speak, we are not calmed.
Is there any comfort over the death of a daughter-sister-granddaughter?
Is there any comfort that in the prime of your innocence,
Your mouth licks the dust.[1]

Is there any comfort,
Given that you will not return,
To bask in the light of life!

You were a sixteen-year-old girl, 16
And before you knew what life was,
You were cut off in the spring of your days.
How can we not scream out over the injustice of the cruel fate,
That stole your rights to life,
To love, and to happiness,
In our liberated land.

Holy ground, the ground in which you are buried
Shall cry out and scream
And the clods of earth shall weep.

And the heart will weep secretly
And will refuse to be comforted,
For the candle has been extinguished – the candle of Ruchele.

With bowed heads and anguished heart, we pray:
Would it be that your soul be bound in the bonds of life.
May your clods of earth be sweet to you.
Your memory will not depart from the hearts of all of us.
