Foreword

Translated by M. David Isaak

Among the Yizkor Books of the Jewish Communities in Europe that were decimated in the Shoah will be found this Yizkor Book of the Jews of Luniniec / Kozanhorodok – an older community that is in the vicinity of other, more recent communities – in Folsiah, White Russia.

Its content describes the lives of our parents and our dear brothers and sisters during weekdays, Shabbats and Holidays, during days of joyous celebration and days of grief; their dreams and longings, their beliefs and conclusions.

May this book be placed on each of our tables, revealing to our eyes the pure lives of the inhabitants of our villages; pictures of the Beit Midrashim (synagogues), the institutions, organizations, schools and cultural organizations. It will speak of their constant life struggles, their desperate hopes; never abandoning their positive expectations of the world in their daily occupations, the education of their children, the longing for the the Messiah, a healthy outlook and a world that is entirely good…

We, the survivors and remainders of the Luniniec / Kozanhorodok villages who were fortunate to win our redemption and rebirth remember, with holy trepidation, our brothers and sisters who dreamed of liberation that, unfortunately, eluded them.

May their memories be bound up within all our lives, forever.

The Editors

Translated by M. David Isaak

This book, in memory of our holy communities that were maliciously and with cruelty completely destroyed by the wild-beast Nazis and their followers in 1941 and 1942, bears witness for our generation and future generations to the lives of our fathers and forefathers in the diaspora. There were Jewish communities in Luniniec / Kozanhorodok whose names have been erased from the Jewish map. These two communities are now but a legacy of the past.

In this and future generations, all current survivors from these communities, as they page through and study this Yizkor book, will find an accurate depiction of aspects of daily life during one or two past generations in all the colors and shades of their Jewish experience.

The basis of this book were the billets, notifications, leaflets and daily sheets that were produced at the time by the Organization of Descendants of Luniniec / Kozanhorodok in Israel, under the direction of our member Yosef Ze'evi. The materials he wrote and kept without publishing are now added to the large volume of diverse writings, the fruit of the pens of descendants of our communities, that you the reader will see in the large and accurate descriptions in the contents of this book. They embody the goal of the organizers and “doers” of this work.

We acknowledge with reverence the fully dedicated and faithful efforts of these writers to create an everlasting historical document. They are:

Yosef Ze'evi, Chaim Robinrot and Asher Plotnik who were “harnessed” to the Organization's burden, the gatherings and the writings, without limits of their time:

Secretary of the Organization of Descendants of Luniniec / Kozanhorodok in Israel, Moshe Dravski, who added much material of his own, Chaya and Zvi Dannenberg, Meir Kargolin, Michael Lutzki, Joe Goldman, Joe Feldman – all from New York, who aided us in the acquisition of the paper needed and thereby enabled the printing of the Book, Shmuel Blovaski, Chaya Drabski-Yuzshic, Sonya Drucker-Rojanski, Moshe Drabski, and the brothers Itzl and Bolek Ditalovitski – all from Brazil, who helped with money for the cause.

May their participating efforts and contributions be praised for future generations with glory and honor.

Also to be mentioned are those who joined our efforts that are not descendants of our communities: Nachum Chinitz, and workers at the “Achdut” Press that performed there duties with faith and devotion.
