Hambro's Synagogue Burial Register

INTRODUCTION

THE REGISTER

The register is written in one hand until no. 233 (20 Dec 1807), and another takes over from 234 (20 Jan 1808). They are both neat hands and not difficult to decipher, although it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the letters 'dalet' and 'zayin'. Presumably the register was kept by the secretary of the Hambro' Synagogue.

ITS PURPOSE

The avowed purpose was to make it easy to find the graves of the departed. It was not intended to be a death or burial register, as such. The book was begun, however, when the cemetery began to be used. Whether or not it was a contemporaneous record of deaths cannot be easily ascertained. Some of the entries are not in chronological order, and may have been entered at a later date. This would account for slight anomalies in the correspondence of Hebrew dates and the day of the week on which they are said to have occurred.

NUMERATION

The register is numbered from 1 to 15, 17 to 310, 322 to 331 (on page 18) and the numbers 303 to 331 repeated, but with different names and dates (on page 19, the archivist's pagination), with nothing written against the last three numbers, ie 329-31. To avoid confusion I have starred the numbers which occur on page 19. There is no number 16, and in the first enumeration there are no numbers 311 until 321 inclusive. On the last two pages of the register are the names of "strangers (orhim) who are buried in the cemeteries of the Dukes Place and New Synagogues". Presumably these "cemeteries" was the Brady Street Cemetery which the Great and New Synagogues shared from 1809.

In some cases members it is mentioned that a member is buried in Haggerston.

CLASSES OF MEMBERSHIP

In common with practically all Anglo-Jewish communities in the eighteenth century, and even in some cases until the end of World War II, synagogues recognized three classes of membership. Of first importance were the Ba'alei Batim, corresponding to the Vestry men of the English Parish. This class represented the main founders of the synagogue, their heirs, their sons-in-law, and those, generally the wealthy or otherwise distinguished, who were invited to buy in to the class. From the ranks of the Ba'alei Batim were chosen the office holders (President, Treasurer, etc.) and governing committee. The second rank were Toshavim - seatholders. They had a regular seat in the synagogue for which they paid an annual rental. They were entitled to recite kaddish according to their seniority, to be called to the Torah when joy or sorrow visited their family, to lead the prayers when tradition dictated they should, but not to take part in the governance of the congregation. The third class was Orhim - strangers or guests. These were generally the poor who sat at the back of the synagogue, possibly for decades, who had no regular seat, and paid no annual fee. They did contribute by the offerings, usually compulsory, they made when given some synagogal honour such as being called to the Torah.

When it came to burial congregations recognized just two classes - Ba'alei Batim on the one hand, and Orhim (representing the Toshavim as well as the Orhim) on the other. The Ba'alei Batim and their families were buried in a separate section, or in separate rows, whilst the Orhim had their own section. Anglo-Jewish cemeteries buried men and women who were living with non-Jewish spouses at the time of their death, as well as most suicides, at the edges of the cemetery. This was known technically as min hatzad - AT THE SIDE. The ninth row in the Lauriston Road cemetery seems to have been designated for this purpose, but the names and honorific titles of those buried in this row make it is most unlikely that they fell into these categories.

Married women ranked with their husbands, unmarried women and children with their fathers.

Who were the Orhim mentioned on pages 20 - 22 (nos. [332] - [373]) who were buried in the cemeteries of the Dukes Place, ie the Great Synagogue, and the New Synagogue? They were presumably men and their families who had regularly worshipped in the Hambro' and for whom there was no room at Lauriston Road. One supposes that the Hambro' came to some arrangement in 1809 with the other two congregations to relieve the pressure on its own burial ground.

RESERVED GRAVES

Apparently a grave space could be reserved for a spouse. R. Yehiel Preger, for example, was the first to be buried in the cemetery in February 1788, and his widow was laid to rest next to him ten years later. The reserved space was known as 'virgin ground'.

SURNAMES

In the register one finds the names by which people were known in the Synagogue, but not necessarily how they were known in the street, which is what one would expect to find in a synagogal register at the end of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Where one does find a 'surname' it may be classified as follows, although this is not an exhaustive list:

By English surname: Zvi Hart (35), Leib Norden (76), Anshel Keyser (89); Falk Franks (273);

By previous town or country of residence: Akiba Portsmouth (37); Nathan Liverpool (57), Abraham Oxford (86), Jacob Frenchman (288);

By present place of residence: Getz Whitechapel (82);

By town of family provenance: Samuel Mannheim (31), Isaac Halberstadt (70), Ber Emmrich (95);

By personal characteristics: Israel Rotscher (368), the red haired or complexioned;

By occupation: Aaron jeweller (17), Joseph schneider / tailor (18) [But, there is always the possibility that an occupational surname borne by an ancestor becomes the surname for a descendant who no longer practices that trade]; Moses barber (48), Jonah pencil maker (105).

One is left with a large number of names which cannot be classified because one does not know what they are, or what they represent. The name TOITER, as it is spelled at first, or TUTIR, as it is spelled later, borne by many people is difficult. A toiter is a cadaver, but it is not clear why this appellation is restricted to just a few people. Were they involved with some activity of looking after the dead? Or is the later spelling the more correct? And does that indicate that the deceased was a tutor? RISHER (343), SHEKOTZER (297), SHILDERER (365) AND WETZLIR (281) undoubtedly mean something to someone. Perhaps an imaginative or knowledgeable reader can throw some light on these names and the many other surnames which are to be found herein.

------------------

ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN or CHILDREN WITHOUT A JEWISH FATHER

Children whose father's name is not given, but whose mother's name is given are likely to be either illegitimate or the the child of a non-Jewish father.

Number [348] 19 July 1810, Gittele bat Moses.

Number [350] 25 July 1810, Gitte bat Moses.

------------------

THE WATCH HOUSE

At present (1997) there is a cemetery lodge which houses the key keeper. According to the last page of the register there was a watch house. What was its nature? Did it serve the function of the present lodge, providing permanent accomodation for a cemetery keeper, or was it an ohel, a small chapel, where vachers watched over the dead body when it had to be kept overnight, or where members took it in turn to keep watch for the first few nights after burial?

PRONUNCIATION

The scholar can determine to some extent the way in which London Jews spoke at the end of the eighteenth century by looking at the Hebrew used to transliterate English street names and surnames. Thus we find, for example, Hoondsditch, Greville (Gravel) Lane, Kenterberry (Canterbury), Porshmoit (Portsmouth), Levirpoohl (Liverpool), Vitesheppel (Whitechapel - Hebrew has no 'w' sound), Axfort (Oxford), dshewlir (jeweller - Hebrew has no 'j' sound), barbir (barber). I have in all cases, to the best of my ability as sometimes the name is in any case unfamiliar, given the modern name. Only where words are written in the register in English have I faithfully copied them.

Unlike other eighteenth century documents which distinguish between a Peh and a Feh by drawing a line over the Feh , the two letters are written identically in this register. This does not matter so much when transcribing Fishman or fish man, one is not tempted to write Pishman or pish man, but without any other clue how is one to distinguish between Falk and Polak? The Hebrew consonants are the same for the two names.

-------------

PUNCTUATION

There is virtually no punctuation throughout the register, other than abbreviation marks. I have added commas and full stops where necessary.

------------------

PROSELYTES

There is only one reference to a proselyte, Abraham b Isaac Ger (259), and that is by no means certain. Most proselytes were, and are given the patronymic 'Abraham our father'. This one is 'ben Isaac'. The appellation 'Ger', which does indeed mean 'a proselyte' might, however, be a family name.
